Ruby Star Rising by Melody Miller & Giveaway

‘Ohhhhhhhhh’! we said out loud as we opened the box of fabric from Kokka. These super prints have a very retro 1960′s feel, in fact Melody was inspired by women from shopping catalogues in the late 60′s. She wanted to tell a story about the women, and the objects that filled their lives. I think she’s got it spot on with the vintage dishes, 60′s ladies and transistor radios. The fabrics are a cotton linen mix, so great for cushions, clothing, bags, pot holders, oven mits - the list is endless.

vintage dishes mint

vintage ladies ochre

transistors blue

To celebrate having a fantastic new designer in store, we’re giving away 7 FQs of the Melody Miller range. To enter we’d like to know what inspires you, all you need do is add your comment to this post. Closing day is Thursday 17th February @ 8pm, winner picked at random soon after.

For daily inspiration, I love seeing photographs of other people’s work. It could be food-related, fashion, stationery, crafts… I just love seeing what people make!

And these new fabrics are fab. :)

Kitsch and quirky designs in frivolous and impractical colours that beg to be used to make practical items to bring a bit of glamour to mundane tasks. Maybe it’s just me, but those prints scream kitchen textiles…..

I am inspired by the desire not to be a clone. It is so easy now to suppress our own individuality and to assume someone else’s by buying it - I am inspired by the knowledge that special and personal things can be created through hard work, attention to detail and a little (of our own) imagination.

I have to say I’m inspired by contrasts I see (or imagine) in everyday life - a gorgeous but fun patterned fabric (such as one of the fab examples above!) lining a pinstripe suit jacket; an ancient farmhouse table with a bright and funky table runner; a knitted teapot (sounds daft I know but I’m trying to find a safe clear resin or polymer I can coat and seal the knitting in). Starting off with coventions and then modifying them - okay, tossing them out the window - is what I find most satisfying!!!

Generally the fabric inspires me to make something with it, but sometimes it is a new find such as the old typewriter a friend has lent me, or most recently a pile of old wooden cotton reels. Sometimes a piece of vintage fabric will start to tell a tale of its own which gets me a wondering how to tell it.

Thanks for this giveaway. Oh! Fransson! blog has a quilt she is making with this line, and would enjoy winning to try it out.
