zig zag cushions

cushion on green chair

At Fabric Rehab we love chevrons and zig zags, so we thought we’d show you some cushions we had made by Caroline, the very talented seamstress.  As you can see, she has done a lovely job – and has even pattern matched the chevrons front to back!   The edges have been piped with ecru and burnt orange linen. Soon you will be able to come and have a look at these cushions in situ at our new showroom – but more on that in early 2014…..

Zig Zag Beach Bag

July 30th, 2013

beachbag (267x400) (4)

We’ve got some great cotton canvas Zig Zag fabric in the shop and it’s been pleading to be made into a bag, as it’s summer a beach bag seemed fitting, one that’ll easily hold 2-3 towels, suncream and a good book.  I was searching on the web and came across this free tutorial for the exact shape I had in mind.  It’s a fab pattern, very simple, great if you’re a beginner, I decided to line it and pop some interfacing between the in and outer fabric at the bottom, you could also cover some cardboard and pop this in the bottom to give a sturdy base.  Once I’d cut the pattern and fabric it took about 3 hours to put together, et voila, ready to hit the beach!

Shelburne Falls Skirt and Simplicity Patterns

July 16th, 2013

We’ve recently taken delivery of several Simplicity patterns and thought it would be really useful to give you an idea of how the patterns look once made.  We’ll be showcasing patterns over the coming weeks with images of the finished product and a review of the pattern.  I’d like to introduce our very own pattern reviewer, Caroline Williams.  Caroline will be taking you through the pattern and giving hints and tips on each project, her attention to detail is exceptional, so I know you’re in good hands! Our first pattern is Simplicity1917 which is a mid to long length skirt, we used Shelburne Falls, a gorgeous vintage inspired collection by Denyse Schmidt.  Now, over to Caroline for the review..

 Simplicity 1917 Pattern Review

This is a fantastic skirt pattern which is quick to sew and very stylish.  The drawings and photograph on the pattern cover don’t do it justice!  There are several options for different lengths, or to sew different panels in different fabrics.  All views are pleated both front and back, and fasten on the wearer’s left with a side zip. I made up View B in size 12, although the pattern is for an unlined skirt, I chose to line it with a lightweight cotton to add a little more weight and structure to the skirt.  The pattern is very versatile and will make for many different looks depending on what fabric you use.  It works really well in quilting weight cotton since the structure of the fabric holds the pleats well.  However, it would be equally lovely in a lightweight cotton for a floaty feel, and would even work well as a winter skirt made up in a lightweight wool or tweed fabric. The skirt was quick and easy to sew, and would be a perfect project for a beginner or someone wishing to brush up on rusty dressmaking skills.  The instructions were clear and easy to follow with very good explanatory drawings. Here are a few guidance points which might be helpful:

  • The fabric requirements on the envelope are generous.  View B size 12 calls for 2 ¼ yards (203cm) of 45” wide fabric, but I cut it from only 167cm (despite adding 5cm length to the skirt, and with a little extra allowed for pattern matching).
  • If you wish to add a lining, simply cut an a-line pattern piece a little shorter than the main skirt, and without pleats (as these would add unwanted bulk).  Make up the skirt lining leaving the top 8” of one side seam unsewn (for the zip opening) and then insert it inside the main skirt, wrong sides together.  Then sew the skirt and lining together around the top edge within the seam allowance, stopping 3cm from each side (so the lining can be folded back to insert the zip).  Continue as normal to attach the waistband and insert the zip, and then fold under the rough edges of the lining and handstitch them down along the zip opening.  The lining should be hemmed separately to the main skirt.
  • Step 6 on the pattern asks you to edge finish the lower edge of the waistband facing.  I chose not to do this, and instead folded under the rough edge at step 9, stitching it down from the right side.  This results in a neat finish on the inside of the skirt, but wouldn’t work with a thicker fabric as the extra fold would add bulk.  Here you could follow the pattern instructions to finish the facing edge, or you could choose to finish the rough edge with some bias binding which looks really professional and gives you the chance to add a bit of contrasting colour if you wish (it will be unseen when worn).
  • I chose not to understitch the facing (step 8).  Instead I edgestitched through the waistband and facing at step 9, catching the folded under rough edge of the facing as I went.  This was in place of “stitching in the ditch” of the waistband seam as per step 9.  The result is that you see a line of edgestitching around the waistband but I like the visual interest of this, and it also makes for a stronger waistband, especially if it is also supporting a lining.  I then pressed the waistband before adding a second row of edgestitching around the top edge.  As well as adding a different “look” I find this method of attaching a waistband easier as stitching in the ditch isn’t always easy when you have pleats to contend with!
  • I chose to use a concealed zip in place of a regular zip (and inserted it accordingly rather than as per the pattern).  I think it makes for a smoother finish to the skirt, especially since the opening is at the side and you don’t necessarily want to see a flap covering a zip there.
  • I chose to slipstitch the hem by hand rather than machining it (step 13).  It takes a little time but the finish looks great.

The Handmade Home, Cherry Menlove, Book Publication Day

The Handmade Home, Cherry Menlove, Book Publication Day

We were jumping up and down to discover we’d been credited as a supplier of funky and retro fabric in the new Cherry Menlove book – The Handmade Home.

It’s full of great projects taking you through the seasons and events of the year.  One that I will definitely be doing is the Movie night, my 7 year old son (soon to be 8) saw this and that was that – next party theme decided!  Movie night with mini burgers, french fries in paper cones and 3 different flavours of popcorn is a sure-fire winner.  Plus, any book that shows you how to make blackcurrant vodka has the thumbs up from us :)

Cherry’s book is available from all major book retailers and if you’d like to read more from Cherry or would just like a bit of inspiration then take a look at Cherry’s website.

Felt House Advent Calendar

November 21st, 2012

Christmas is fast approaching and it’s time to start our Christmas projects.  The first one is a felt house advent calendar that Nancy made.  All the houses are slightly different and you end up with a lovely quirky little street.  They were stitched together and stuffed with a little wadding and on the back is a small pouch for a sweet treat.  The numbers can either be sewn on or glued for quickness.

If you’d like to make you own house advent we’ve put together a multi-coloured felt pack that would do just the job.

‘they’re changing guard at buckingham palace…’

May 5th, 2012

I have one very happy boy, modelling his new Jubilee shirt, he can’t wait for the Jubilee Tea Party!  We made the shirt using London Buildings and Simplicity pattern 4760.  Watch this space for more Jubilee projects over the next few days.

P.S I love this poem by A.A Milne, it really reminds me of sometime in my childhood, thought you might like the rest of the lyrics:

They’re changing guard at Buckingham Palace -
Christopher Robin went down with Alice.
Alice is marrying one of the guard.
“A soldier’s life is terrible hard,”
Says Alice.

They’re changing guard at Buckingham Palace -
Christopher Robin went down with Alice.
We saw a guard in a sentry-box.
“One of the sergeants looks after their socks,”
Says Alice.

They’re changing guard at Buckingham Palace -
Christopher Robin went down with Alice.
We looked for the King, but he never came.
“Well, God take care of him, all the same,”
Says Alice.

They’re changing guard at Buckingham Palace -
Christopher Robin went down with Alice.
They’ve great big parties inside the grounds.
“I wouldn’t be King for a hundred pounds,”
Says Alice.

They’re changing guard at Buckingham Palace -
Christopher Robin went down with Alice.
A face looked out, but it wasn’t the King’s.
“He’s much too busy a-signing things,”
Says Alice.

They’re changing guard at Buckingham Palace -
Christopher Robin went down with Alice.
“Do you think the King knows all about me?”
“Sure to, dear, but it’s time for tea,”
Says Alice.

Two for the boys…

September 13th, 2011

I’ve got 2 boys and I’m always on the hunt for quirky boys prints, unfortunately there isn’t the range for boys as there is for girls so we’re hoping to even it up a little with these 2 fab prints. My youngest son (age 2) is mad about anything with 4 wheels, I have a feeling a floor cushion could be the next project.

Ruby Star Rising by Melody Miller & Giveaway

February 10th, 2011

‘Ohhhhhhhhh’! we said out loud as we opened the box of fabric from Kokka.  These super prints have a very retro 1960′s feel, in fact Melody was inspired by women from shopping catalogues in the late 60′s.  She wanted to tell a story about the women, and the objects that filled their lives.  I think she’s got it spot on with the vintage dishes, 60′s ladies and transistor radios.  The fabrics are a cotton linen mix, so great for cushions, clothing, bags, pot holders, oven mits – the list is endless.

To celebrate having a fantastic new designer in store, we’re giving away 7 FQs of the Melody Miller range.  To enter we’d like to know what inspires you, all you need do is add your comment to this post.  Closing day is Thursday 17th February @ 8pm, winner picked at random soon after.

How to….Christmas Bird Garland

November 22nd, 2010

Here is our second ‘time friendly’ project, for this you’d probably need a couple of hours altogether, but perhaps if you don’t have that time in one block you could cut the template and fabric in the evening and put together the garland in the day.  Here’s how…

Cut you chosen template out of card (we used a simple bird design, but you could do Christmas Trees, mini stockings or hearts – the list is endless!).  Select the fabrics you want to use, scraps come in very handy here, cut 2 pieces of fabric for each bird.

Place the fabric right sides together and sew around leaving 1/2cm seam, leave 5cm gap for turning right way.   So you get a nice shape, snip around any curves or points, careful to avoid your seam.   Turn right side out and stuff with wadding.  Hand sew to close.  Finally stitch your birds to ric rac or ribbon and voila!

We used our Scandinavian Christmas Bundles for the garland, unfortunately we’re out of stock at the moment, but they should be back in the shop by Friday.

How to…..Scandinavian style gift tags

November 13th, 2010

These days, with everybody’s busy lives, its hard to find the time for all the things we’d like to make, especially in the run up to Christmas.  With this in mind Nancy has put together some lovely Christmas projects that are ‘time friendly’.  The first one is for these lovely Christmas tags.  Here’s how to…..

1.  Glue fabric to card (Nancy used red card) with slightly watered down PVA glue. Its best to use a brush for an even coverage.  Leave to dry.

2.  Turn over and draw round your chosen templates, cut round with scissors.  Leave under a heavy book so they are nice and flat.

3.  Make a hole with a hole punch and tie with raffia or twine, and admire your work!

If you’d like to use the same fabrics that we have, its the Scandinavian Christmas Fabric Bundle.  Happy crafting!

November 10th, 2010

We’ve just sent off our new ad to go into the January edition of Sew Hip magazine, we used the image below.   Sew Hip is a great magazine with lots of fun projects, I like the fact they also have a crafting section for kids too.

I love the the fresh colours of these fabrics – cups and pots and pans are very ‘on trend’ at the moment – great for aprons, pot holders, coasters and table mats.   All the fabrics below can be found in our ‘What’s New’ category.

Rendall & Wright

November 2nd, 2010

These gorgeous Christmas decorations and cushions have been produced by Lindsey and Helen, the duo behind the Suffolk based interior furnishings company – Rendall & Wright.

3 cushions3 cushions1

I love that all 3 cushions really compliment each other, they would look great together on a sofa.  Lindsey and Helen used fabrics from our Alexander Henry ‘Farmdale’ collection.  I thought the cushions looked so plump and sumptuous – a tip from Lindsey is to use a feather cushion pad a couple of inches bigger than your cushion cover to achieve the same look.

Who wouldn’t want one of these hanging from the Christmas tree filled with chocolate coins?!  The girls made these lovely cone Christmas decorations using a range of fabrics from our Funky Christmas range.

If you’d like to meet Lindsey and Helen and see their gorgeous range of goodies they will be at the following festive fairs in Suffolk:-

Edwardstone Christmas fair – Friday 5th November 9.30am – 1pm
Elizabeth Hospice Fair – Thursday 18th November 9.30am – 3.30pm
Ipswich School Christmas fair – Friday 19th November 12.00pm – 5.00pm

Birthday boy and dog

September 9th, 2010

Where has the last year gone, Alfie turned 1 yesterday, it doesn’t seem possible.  We had a little tea party for him which he thoroughly enjoyed.  One of the highlights for him was playing with his favourite little tractor, as you can see, he is making ‘full-on’ tractor noises!  One of his presents from us was ‘dog’.  Alfies first word wasn’t ‘mama’ or ‘dada’, it was ‘dog’, so it only seemed right that he got a sausage dog for his birthday.  I used Farmdale Crosshatch Mustard for the body, Farmdale Blossom Red for the tail and Duck Egg Linen for his ears.  When Alfie saw him he ‘arrrrrred’ him with a big squeeze – sweet!

And the winner is……

September 8th, 2010

Jennie, comment 22 – congratulations!  This is what Jennie suggested:-

‘I adore your site and cannot help but buy lots every time I visit.

What would be helpful in my eyes is seeing all the fabrics in a category in one go rather than having to clck the option or browse per page, if that makes sense. Also because I usually trawl through all the categories anyway I would like to have to option to see all fabrics in one huge list, regardless of what category they are in. And then being able to sort by colour would be great.

And i agree that more customer or your projects would be really inspiring.

But keep up the good work as yours is one of my favourite websites!’

Thank you to everyone that entered and for all your comments, we’ve had some great suggestions.   Its an exciting time for Fabric Rehab, watch this space for the new and improved shop…

What's New?

August 29th, 2010

Lots, that’s what!  We’ve had a dry spell as far as deliveries go (not as far as the weathers concerned!), stacks has been ordered –  but its taken a while to reach us and I’m glad to say its started to arrive.

First we have Kiss Me Owl Pink and Kiss Me Owl Chocolate, super sweet owls just twit twooing for good homes!

kiss me owl chocolatekiss me owl pink

It might still be officially summer but the inclement weather has got me thinking about Christmas.  I’m the first to twitch when Christmas crackers arrive in the supermarkets 3 months early, but we had to get this adorable reindeer fabric in the shop now.  If you look closely you can spot Rudolph with his red nose.  Perfect for stockings,  runners and tablecloths.  You’ll find him here in Funky Christmas.

sparkle all the way

Next we have the new Free as a Bird collection, lots of pretty colours, dots and sweet little birds.

free as bird bundle pinkfree as bird big stash bundle

Finally we have a new fabric category, Organic Cotton.  Here you will find the lovely new collection by Nancy Mims ‘Free to Grow’, gorgeous designs that are produced using 100% organic cotton.  We have organic plains to add to this category, they should be in the shop next week.

The fabric used for this sweet dress (Itty Bitty Baby dress) is on order, hopefully due to arrive soon.  The good news is you can download the pattern free from Made by Rae.  This is a lovely blog with lots of great patterns, I particulary like the ‘Big Butt Baby Pants’ – I’ve got to make some for Alfie!

As you can see we’re already taking your comments on board (free patterns), your input has been fantastic – keep it coming!

We had to put something in the shop to brighten up the dull days we’ve had recently and I think these have done the trick!  Nancy has put together some fabulous bundles, selecting fabrics that compliment each other not only by colour but by design too.  Instead of you having to ‘hum and ha’ over what goes with what, we’ve done the job for you.   We’d love to know what you think…

Bunting Card

June 8th, 2010

bunting card

We love being creative here at Fabric Rehab, whilst its great being busy packaging orders, any crafting gets squeezed in during our lunch hour.  Hence this little project…

I’m sure most of us have a little stock pile of fabric hanging around, and probably numerous weddings and birthday’s over the summer months.  So why not make a really easy bunting card?  I made this one for a friends wedding celebration.  Here’s how:-

Cut your scraps into small triangles and arrange on to a piece of card (I used A4 folded) using either thin ribbon or string as the bunting tape, glue into place (I used PVA glue).  If you would like a more colourful one just use coloured card instead – TA DA!  A really summery celebration card and dead easy!

Sidney by the fire

Our dog Sidney is a sucker for a warm fire (mind you, so am I), as soon as I say ‘shall we light the fire’ he’s camped out in front of the wood burner.

As its sooo cold we thought it would be wise to get some lovely needlecord into the shop, we’ve got 3 different designs and they can be found in the ‘Cool Cords’ category.  They’d make gorgeous pinafores, skirts or shirts.

Happy snow year!

January 7th, 2010

snow, snow, snow

I don’t think there are many parts of the country that have escaped the snow and although we had alot today and local schools were closed, here at Fabric Rehab we are still getting orders out, we wouldn’t want to hold up any crafty projects!  Having said that they may be delayed if Royal Mail can’t get through to the worst affected areas, hopefully not for too long.

So to brighten up a cold winters day we’ve put together 2 wonderful  bundles of 12 FQs, equivalent to 3 yards of fabric in each bundle.  They’re fresh, zesty and quite frankly irresistable!  Available here in ‘Fabric Bundles’.

Another of our talented Fabric addicts has sent these pics of a dress she made for her 1 year old.  Claire used the Baby Doll fabric  – which has all but sold out now.  Claire made this dress one evening, and whilst the weather is so cold and snowy at the moment its a nice way to get through these wintry nights!
We are always eager to see other Fabric Addicts work, so please do email your pics.

Grey skies and cheery skirts.

Spring Skirt

It’s a very grey miserable day here in Suffolk,  so we thought we’d show you something colourful! I made this skirt for my 2 1/2  year old niece using 1/2 a yard of  pretty Pink Pop Flower .  It was so easy to make and because it has an elasticated waist it should take my niece to 3 and beyond.
